PEDESTRIAN SUSTAINS SERIOUS INJURY IN CROSSVILLE DRIVEWAY ACCIDENT
A 65-year-old Soddy Daisy man suffered suspected serious injuries Saturday evening after being struck by a 15-passenger van while retrieving a walker from the vehicle’s rear in a residential driveway on Old Jamestown Highway.
According to a Tennessee Electronic Traffic Crash Report filed by the Crossville Police Department, the incident occurred on October 24, 2026, at approximately 4:01 PM at Old Jamestown Highway.
Investigators stated that the vehicle, a 2021 Ford van operated by 42-year-old Carnell Deangelo Brakfield of La Vergne, was stopped in a private driveway to drop off passengers. Jeffrey Alan Howard, 65, walked to the rear of the van to retrieve his walker. According to the driver’s statement, multiple passengers were exiting simultaneously, and after the side door was closed, the driver failed to notice the rear doors had been opened.
As Brakfield began backing up, the van knocked Howard to the ground. Howard shouted out, prompting the driver to stop immediately. The victim fell onto his left hip and ended up partially beneath the rear of the vehicle.
Emergency medical services transported Howard to the Cumberland Medical Center emergency room with suspected serious injuries. Five other occupants inside the van—including four passengers and the driver—reported no injuries.
Crossville Police Lieutenant Larry Qualls investigated the incident. Authorities noted that no alcohol or drug use was suspected, and no charges or citations were listed in the initial report.
