PHOENIX HIGH SCHOOL AUDIT FINDS PAST GRADUATION DISCREPANCIES

An audit held by the Cumberland County School System has found some discrepancies in past graduation records at the Phoenix High School. Dr. Rebecca Wood reported to the Board of Education Thursday night that some graduation requirement deficiencies were found during the course of the 2012-13 school year. Errors were discovered with some of the graduates of that year and so an internal audit was conducted. In an effort to maintain transparency and provide current and accurate information, the audit was also expanded to years before and after 2012-13 to the 2015-16 school year to make sure that all graduated with the proper courses, tests, and credits. In the current year 96.9 percent of all graduates from the school have been verified with the percentage representing one student who is missing an End of Course test. Board members stated that they appreciated the transparency in the matter and would rather be told about these types of errors when first discovered than later. Dr. Wood also said that those receiving a diploma during the audited years had graduated, and if any problems arose down through the years, they would be around to adjust them. Director of Schools Janet Graham told the group that there was nothing anyone could do about the problems in the past and that the school system must focus on the future.
