Macon County, North Carolina, authorities say the wreckage of a single-engine plane was located in the Whiteside Mountain area Friday afternoon. The plane crashed Thursday night after taking off from Knoxville’s Island Home Airport about 5:30 p.m., bound for Aiken, South Carolina. It was due to land around 7 p.m.
Atlanta Air-traffic controllers lost contact with the single-engine Mooney M20C shortly after 6:15 near the Macon and Jackson county lines.
The pilot, Gary Huttleston, of Aiken, was the only person on board. His body was found in the wreckage. Officials are working to determine the cause of the crash, which occurred in a rugged and not readily accessible area of Jackson County.
