PUTNAM COUNTY MAN CHARGED WITH ATTEMPTED MURDER
A Putnam County man is now facing attempted first-degree murder charges instead of an original arrest for aggravated assault. Officers say 70-year-old James Alex Greer of Cookeville entered the home of a female earlier this month to allegedly assist her with committing suicide. She told police that they were friends at the time of the incident. According to police reports, the woman was asleep when Greer allegedly came into her bedroom and awoke to a noise. When she asked what he was doing, Greer allegedly replied that “this is what is called an assisted suicide.’ Greer allegedly attempted to put the firearm in the womans hand. The female managed to get the firearm Greer allegedly had on him before escaping the residence and calling for help. Greer is under a $200,000 bond at the Putnam County jail. He is scheduled to be arraigned in court under the new charge April 17.
