PUTNAM COUNTY SHERIFF’S K-9 RECOVERS FIREARM FROM SCHOOL PROPERTY

This morning, on April 3, 2025, Monterey High School reported suspicious activity in their parking lot and requested for PCSO to come deploy their K-9 unit for random vehicle checks.
Deputies arrived on scene and deployed their K-9s and not long after K-9 Rocky alerted on a White Honda Civic. This allowed the Deputies to be able to perform a search of the vehicle which led to the discovery of a 9mm Taurus Handgun.
The driver of the White Honda Civic was identified as an 18-year-old 12 grade student, Nicholas Black. At this time Investigators are still looking into the origin of the firearm and if Black had any intentions of using the firearm in a harmful way.
Black was charged with Unlawful Possession of a Weapon on School Property. Black has a bond set at $50,000 and a court date of May 19, 2025.
Sheriff Farris stated, “This situation shows the importance of proactive measures for maintaining school safety. It’s important that if you see something to say something. Every threat is real until proven otherwise.”
