RELAY FOR LIFE HELD IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY

The annual Relay for Life was held in Cumberland County yesterday at the community complex.

The annual event is a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

The event started with a survivor and caregiver dinner at 5 p.m.

The ceremony kicked off with an opening prayer from cancer survivor Joe Pruett.

The Young Marines of Cumberland County presented the flags.

The Plateau Women’s Group sang the national anthem to those attending the ceremony.

Randy Davis, CAO of Cumberland Medical Center, was the first guest speaker.

“I am amazed to see how much money is raised here in Cumberland County for the American Cancer Society. What we are going for is a world without cancer one day,” said Davis.

Dr. Dirk Davidson with Tennessee Plateau Oncology was the next speaker.

“Our weapons to fight cancer have greatly improved over the years. We take time in this event to remember and honor ones who passed away from cancer,” said Davidson.

A survivor and caregiver’s lap took place.

Organizers spoke about the Hope Lodge in Nashville. From January to August of 2023, 12 cancer survivors in Cumberland County, and their caregivers, received lodging there while receiving treatment. It resulted in a total of 401 free nights and just over $70,000 in savings to the patients.

Luminarias were on display after dark in memory of those who passed away from cancer.

The ceremony concluded around 10 p.m.
