This just in to the 1057 Newsroom: We now have additional road closures in Roane County as a result of the recent rains in East Tennessee.

Riggs Chapel Road in Harriman is closed due to a potential slide.

Roane County Road Superintendent Dennis Ferguson told 1057 News minutes ago there’s been a slide from above the road onto the surface of the roadway, creating a potentially hazardous situation for motorists.

Also, Airport Road on the Roane County side from the Rockwood city limits is closed due to road failure.

About that closure, Ferguson said, “The road has slipped and it’s starting to fall in.”

Road crews and engineers are out assessing the situation and evaluating the damage. Ferguson said crews have set up concrete barriers to keep people from accessing the road. “I know they get aggravated, but we’re thinking of their safety,” he said. “I don’t want anybody to get hurt. It’s unsafe right now.”
