ROANE COUNTY COMMISSION TO CONSIDER MORATORIUM EXPANSION ON DATA CENTERS AND BATTERY STORAGE FACILITIES
Tonight, the Roane County Commission will convene at the Roane County Courthouse in Kingston for a regular meeting highlighted by a key public hearing on commercial land-use regulations.
The commission will open with a 6:00 p.m. public hearing to receive public comment on a proposed temporary moratorium. If passed, the measure would halt the acceptance, processing, and approval of applications for:
-
Data centers
-
Cryptocurrency operations and mining facilities
-
Battery energy storage systems (BESS) and storage facilities
The proposed resolution aims to pause new developments while county officials draft and implement comprehensive planning, zoning, and building regulations tailored to these emerging industries.
This proposal builds upon action taken by the commission in July, which established a two-year moratorium strictly on data centers. The resolution on Monday’s agenda under new business significantly expands that scope to cover cryptocurrency and battery energy infrastructure.
Additional Agenda Items
Beyond the land-use moratorium, commissioners are slated to consider several other key items under new business:
-
Annual Committee Appointments: Approval of county committee assignments for the upcoming fiscal year.
-
School Speed Zone: A proposed resolution to establish a designated school speed zone for Mount Pisgah Christian Academy along Highway 61.
-
County Finances: Consideration of various routine budget-related resolutions.
