ROANE COUNTY COMMISSION VOTES DOWN FUNDING FOR VO-TECH STUDENT-COUNSELING POSITIONS

The Roane County Commission engaged in another battle over money Tuesday night as School Director Gary Aytes presented a budget amendment for two new positions dealing with counseling of students for vocational training. Aytes proposed moving an estimated $180,000 of existing funds around, with adjustments in funds in a specific line item.

This isn’t the first time the issue had come before the commission.

Aytes told commissioners the State wanted him to provide these two hires to help students wanting to enter vocational or tech training classes to help prepare them for their careers. He added the special counselors could take students on industry visits and show  them how the businesses they may be interested in operate.

After approximately 30 minutes of discussion, the resolution was voted down, 13 to two, with commissioners Berry and Meadows voting yes.

A subsequent resolution was approved to accept grant funds for seat belts on at least four of the Roane County School System’s forthcoming buses.
