ROCKWOOD AIRPORT TO RECEIVE MAJOR TERMINAL UPGRADES

Rockwood Airport is poised for a significant upgrade with a $5 million investment to modernize its terminal, as announced by Sen. Ken Yager (R-Kingston). The funding comprises $4 million from an amended state budget proposal by Gov. Bill Lee and an additional $1 million from the City of Rockwood. This infusion of resources will replace the airport’s outdated terminal with contemporary facilities, enhancing its capacity to accommodate business-class general aviation aircraft and bolstering regional economic development.
The project is seen as a strategic move due to the airport’s advantageous location near Interstate 40 and Oak Ridge, positioning it as a vital hub for business travel. Sen. Yager emphasized the timely nature of the investment, noting the growing presence of Flatrock Motorsports’ world-class racing facility, which has increased the airport’s usage. He expressed gratitude to Gov. Lee for prioritizing the initiative, underscoring its potential to transform the area by supporting regional growth and connectivity.
Rockwood Mayor Jason Jolly hailed the funding as a “game-changer,” predicting it will enhance services, draw investment, and provide long-term benefits for the community. The mayor credited Sen. Yager’s advocacy for securing this opportunity and expressed enthusiasm for collaborating with state and airport officials to realize the project. Gov. Lee’s amended budget, which includes this allocation, is now advancing through the Tennessee Legislature, with approval anticipated next month, marking a key step toward revitalizing Rockwood Airport.
