ROCKWOOD MUNICIPAL AIRPORT BREAKS GROUND ON $5 MILLION NEW TERMINAL
On May 12, city officials from Rockwood, airport staff, private investors, and local and state leaders gathered at Rockwood Municipal Airport for a groundbreaking ceremony marking a major expansion. The project includes over $5 million in public investment for a new airport terminal and more than $11 million in private funding committed to new hangar development.
The growth is fueled by the nearby Flatrock Motorclub and the rapid industrial expansion in the Roane County–Oak Ridge corridor, which is emerging as a key hub in the nation’s “Nuclear Renaissance.” More than 10 companies have pledged around $12 billion in investments there, highlighted by major projects from TRISO-X and Orano USA.
As a result, Rockwood Municipal Airport is positioned to become an important regional transportation hub, offering a convenient alternative to the more congested McGhee Tyson Airport for Flatrock Motorclub members, business leaders, and industry professionals. Air traffic at the airport has already increased significantly in anticipation of these developments.
