SCAMMERS CONTINUE TO TARGET ELDERLY IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY
The Crossville Police Department yesterday took a scam report.
It states a woman in her late 70s received a message on Facebook Messenger from a man. He told her he was a friend of her late husband and wanted to come to Crossville to visit her from Alaska. He requested money from her to make the supposed trip.
The woman mailed two $30 Steam cards, three $100 prepaid Visa gift cards, and one $400 Visa gift card. She then turned around and mailed $6,000 in cash on November 15. She sent another $6,000 five days later and $4,500 on an unspecified date.
The report states all of the forms of currency went to an address in Marietta, Georgia.
The victim also mailed six $1,000 unsigned money orders to the same address.
Officers say an “Ojitevwobo Agberhiere” had put their name in the pay to the order section of the money order.
The victim lost a total of $23,260.
