SECOND MURDER TRIAL OF WHITE COUNTY MAN ENDS WITH A MISTRIAL

A second murder trial of a White County man charged with a shooting that killed more than a dozen unarmed citizens in Iraq has ended in a mistrial. Nicholas Slatten of Sparta worked for Blackwater, that was hired by the U.S. State Department to protect diplomats during the Iraq War. In September 2007, Blackwater guards opened fire on Baghdad’s Nisour Square, killing and injuring unarmed civilians. Slatten was one of four charged with the deaths. He was previously convicted of murder but last year the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia threw out Statten’s conviction and said he should get a new trial. After weeks of deliberations, the jury could not reach a unanimous verdict, and U.S. District Judge Royce Lamberth declared a mistrial on Wednesday. Where this case goes from now is uncertain. Attorneys for both sides will meet a week from today (September 14, 2018) to discuss the options, including the possibility of a third trial.
