SEVERE WEATHER THREAT THIS WEEKEND

A strong low-pressure system is set to bring severe weather to Middle and East Tennessee from Friday evening through Saturday night, with the potential for damaging storms, tornadoes, and heavy rainfall.

In Middle Tennessee, severe storms are expected late Friday into early Saturday and again Saturday night. The primary threats include damaging straight-line winds with gusts up to 65 mph, as well as tornadoes and large hail. The National Weather Service has placed most of the region under a moderate risk (level 3 of 5) for severe weather. While the exact timing remains uncertain, confidence in the overall storm threat is increasing. In addition to the severe weather risks, heavy rainfall of 2 to 3 inches is expected, though flooding concerns remain low at this time.

In East Tennessee, the severe weather threat is even higher, with the greatest risk in southeast Tennessee and the Cumberland Plateau. Discrete supercells could develop in the afternoon, followed by a powerful line of storms in the evening and overnight. Widespread damaging winds are the primary concern, but tornadoes, large hail, and flash flooding—particularly west of Interstate 75—are also possible. A High Wind Watch is in effect from Friday evening through early Sunday, with mountain wind gusts reaching up to 80 mph, which could rapidly spread any ongoing wildfires before heavy rain arrives Saturday night.

Key Takeaways:

  • Severe storms are expected from Friday night through Saturday night.
  • Middle Tennessee: Moderate risk, damaging winds, and tornadoes possible.
  • East Tennessee: High risk, with significant wind damage, tornadoes, and flooding threats.
  • Rainfall totals of 2-3 inches may lead to flash flooding.
  • Mountain winds up to 80 mph could increase wildfire concerns before rain arrives.
