A Roane County murder case turned up on a nationally televised series Thursday night. The Smoot murder was featured on NBC’s Dateline series. Shawn Smoot was convicted and sentenced in the murder of 23-year-old Brooke Morris in Oct. 2011. Her lifeless body was discovered lying along a side road in the rural part of the county. In August 2016, Smoot was convicted of the crime and sentenced to life in prison without consideration of parole. Smoot has since appealed but that appeal was denied.
