SOUTH ROANE COUNTY FIRE DEPARTMENT ISSUES URGENT HEAT SAFETY ALERT AS TEMPERATURES SOAR

With temperatures rising and even more extreme heat forecasted for tomorrow, the South Roane County Volunteer Fire Department has issued an urgent advisory urging residents to prioritize heat safety and check on vulnerable community members.

Fire officials are emphasizing the importance of community vigilance during this intense heat wave, particularly regarding elderly family members, neighbors, and vulnerable populations.

“A simple phone call or knock on the door can make a big difference,” the department stated, reminding residents that looking out for one another is critical during extreme weather events.

To help residents navigate the dangerous conditions, the fire department highlighted several key preventative measures:

  • Hydrate Constantly: Drink plenty of water, even if you do not feel thirsty.

  • Protect Your Skin: Wear sunscreen and strictly limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours.

  • Find Air Conditioning: If your home is unable to stay cool, residents are encouraged to spend a few hours at the local library to cool off, utilize the air conditioning, and read.

Officials are also urging the public to take a few minutes to learn the distinct warning signs of heat exhaustion versus heat stroke, noting that being able to identify the symptoms could save a life.
