STATE RELEASES AUTOPSY RESULTS OF CUMBERLAND CO. INMATE THAT PASSED AWAY

The State Medical Examiners Office released a final autopsy report late yesterday regarding an inmate who died after being in the Cumberland County jail.

A preliminary autopsy performed on 35-year-old Angel Tayes of Kingston by Cumberland County Medical Examiner Ben Gibson revealed the cause of death as “sepsis due to infection of the inner lining of the heart chambers and heart valves because of IV drug abuse.”

Sepsis is a potentially life-threatening complication of an infection. Sepsis occurs when chemicals released into the bloodstream to fight the infection trigger inflammatory responses throughout the body.

In the narrative summary, Gibson stated Tayes was incarcerated at the Cumberland County jail beginning on July 29, 2018. During her being in custody, the jail nurse had noticed Tayes’ blood pressure was low and the staff put her in a medical holding area. Her blood pressure continues to decrease and Tayes was transported to Cumberland Medical Center. Her condition continued to deteriorate and advanced cardiac life support was initiated. Tayes did not respond and passed away Monday, August 6, 2018.

Her body was sent to the Center for Forensic Medicine in Nashville for a further examination by a pathologist.

In the final report from the state released yesterday afternoon to 105.7 News, Dr. Thomas Deering conducted the examination of Tayes. In the report, Deering confirmed the initial findings of Gibson for the cause of death for Tayes.

Tayes was in jail for driving on a suspended license and failure to appear in court and was serving 10 days. No signs of foul play were noted when she was transported to Cumberland Medical Center.
