SUSPECT IN CUSTODY IN MURDER OF PREGNANT KENTUCKY WOMAN
Investigators in Whitley County, Kentucky, say 29-year-old Daniel Nantz is their primary suspect in Saturday’s shooting death of his pregnant girlfriend.
Kentucky State Police say Geri Johnson, also 29, was taken to Baptist Health Corbin Hospital with a gunshot wound. Johnson, who was seven months pregnant, died from her injuries. Her baby, named Amelia, was delivered and rushed to U.K. Medical Center – where she died Tuesday evening from lack of oxygen and blood to her brain.
The Fayette County coroner’s report lists the cause of Amelia’s death as severe hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy, and the manner of death as homicide.
A Kentucky State Police spokesman said Nantz was already taken into custody earlier this week on federal drug charges.
“We will be seeking fetal homicide charges as well a murder charges against him,” Trooper Lloyd Cochran told the media. “We don’t know what the grand jury will ultimately decide, but that is what we will be seeking.”
Those charges are expected to be filed against him when the case is presented to the Whitley County Grand Jury April 1.
Police are not commenting on the motive for the shooting, or the exact nature of the gunshot wound or wounds. They claim to have a “very strong” case against Nantz and expect him to be held in federal custody until the grand jury meets.
A joint funeral service for Geri and Amelia Johnson will be conducted at 3 this afternoon EDT at the Croley Funeral Home in Williamsburg.
