TBI INVESTIGATES OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING IN CLEVELAND

At the request of 10th Judicial District Attorney General Stephen Hatchett, TBI special agents continue to investigate the circumstances of an officer-involved shooting Sunday night involving the Cleveland Police Department.

Preliminary information indicates the incident occurred at approximately 11:23 Sunday night at a gas station in the 4100 block of APD 40 where a Cleveland police officer was attempting to serve a warrant on a woman who was a passenger in a vehicle.  When the officer reached into the vehicle, the driver sped away dragging the officer.  The officer fired his gun, striking the driver before falling from the vehicle.  At approximately 1:33 on Monday morning, Bradley County Deputies located the vehicle and the driver at a home in the 300 block of Sipes Road.  That man was transported to the hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The officer suffered minor injuries. At the time of this release the woman with the outstanding warrant remained at large.

TBI agents are working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Throughout the process, investigative findings will be shared with the District Attorney General for his further review and consideration. The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters. That decision rests with the District Attorney General requesting TBI’s involvement.

The TBI does not identify the officers involved in these types of incidents and instead refers questions of that nature to the respective department to answer as it sees fit. Any available updates on this investigation will be posted online at TBINewsroom.com.
