TBI INVESTIGATING CAUSE OF DEATH OF CUMBERLAND COUNTY INMATE

The TBI is investigating the death of a Cumberland County inmate. Sheriff Casey Cox told 105.7 News this afternoon that 35-year-old Angel Tayes of Kingston was transported to Cumberland Medical Center where she passed away. She was in jail for failure to appear in court and was serving 10 days. No signs of foul play were noted and her body has been sent for an autopsy to determine an exact cause of death.

Here is a statement from TBI spokeswoman Susan Niland emailed to 105.7 News in its entirety regarding the death of Tayes:

On August 7, 2018, 13th Judicial District Attorney General Bryant Dunaway requested the TBI investigate the death of Angel Tayes of Kingston. Tayes was booked into the Cumberland County Jail on July 29, 2018. During her incarceration, she became ill and when her health deteriorated, she was put on medical watch. On August 8, 2018, she was released from the jail and taken to an area hospital, where she died on that same day. The investigation remains active and ongoing.”

Because of the conflicting dates from the TBI, we went back to Sheriff Cox who verified that Tayes in fact passed away Monday, August 6, 2018.
