TEMA PLACES GATLINBURG AND PIGEON FORGE UNDER LEVEL 3 STATE OF EMERGENCY
The cities of Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge continue to be evacuated as the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency has placed most of Sevier County under a Level 3 State of Emergency. The EMA reported that as of Tuesday morning, 14,000 people had been evacuated from the region. Over 200 firefighters are working to combat the intense fires and more than 200 more have been pulled in from surrounding areas. Officials are reporting that three people have died and 14 more have been injured. Several thousand residents are without power and six Red Cross or independently operated shelters have been set up. Dozens of structures have been destroyed with fires skirting many of the area’s attractions including Dollywood. All attractions and schools have been closed down including The Great Smokey Mountains National Park in the wake of one of the most heart-rending disasters the state has ever seen. The Mayor of Gatlinburg told media outlets Tuesday, “We are going to rebuild our town and do whatever we can for our citizens.”
