TENNESSEE ABOUT TO BECOME THE FIRST IN UNITED STATES TO MAKE IT A FELONY TO CAMP ON PUBLIC PROPERTY
The rise of homeless encampments in America has prompted a growing demand for solutions. Tennessee will become the first U.S. state to make it a felony to camp on local public property such as parks. Tennessee already made it a felony in 2020 to camp on most state-owned property. The law requires that violators receive at least 24 hours’ notice before an arrest. The felony charge is punishable by up to six years in prison and losing voting rights.
Supporters say the law is needed to get some people to move off the streets and get jobs.
Critics say it is cruel and will make homelessness worse. They claim many landlords won’t rent to felons and a lot of employers won’t hire them.
