Rylan Hyder, a Tennessee boy who captured the hearts of his community with his love for country music, dirt bikes, and Mickey Mouse, has passed away after a long battle with Sanfilippo Syndrome.

His mother, Nicole Simmons Hyder, shared the heartbreaking news in a public statement yesterday, joined by Jonathan and brother Brayden.

“At 1:25 this afternoon, our sweet boy Rylan gained his wings and is now free from Sanfilippo and is in the arms of Jesus,” Hyder wrote. “Please continue to keep us in your prayers. At this time we ask for privacy, when arrangements are made they will be announced.”

What is Sanfilippo Syndrome?

Sanfilippo syndrome is a rare, inherited metabolic disorder—also called Mucopolysaccharidosis type III (MPS III)—that causes severe brain degeneration, developmental delays, and early death, often earning it the name “childhood Alzheimer’s.” It happens when a missing gene enzyme stops the body from breaking down sugar chains, causing toxic buildup in cells.

A Courageous Fight Against a Rare Disease

Diagnosed on November 21, 2014, with Sanfilippo Syndrome Type MPS IIIA, Rylan faced a rare and devastating genetic disorder that impacts every aspect of a child’s life. Throughout their journey, Rylan’s family became passionate advocates, working tirelessly alongside organizations like the Cure Sanfilippo Foundation to raise awareness and fund research for a cure.

Despite the daily physical and emotional toll of the disease, including sleep struggles, therapies, and continuous medical appointments, Rylan was widely remembered for his charming personality and ability to connect with everyone he met.

The family has asked for continued privacy as they prepare funeral and memorial arrangements.
