TENNESSEE HOUSE PASSES SPORTS-BETTING BILL

After almost an hour of heated debate on the House floor Wednesday, a bill that would allow sports betting in Tennessee passed the House handily, despite protests of its being a poor reflection on family values. The vote was 58-37, with two legislators abstaining.

Supporters say revenues generated from fees for online betting could amount to as much as $200 million a year; detractors say it’s a dangerous step that preys on gambling addicts.

As written, the bill provides funding to aid with gambling addiction.

The bill passed in the Senate Finance Committee Wednesday and now heads to the full Senate for a vote, which could come next week.
