TENNESSEE’S ‘PERMITLESS CARRY’ BILL PASSES, HEADS TO GOVERNOR FOR SIGNATURE

The Tennessee State House passed legislation last night to strip the requirement for gun holders to get a permit to carry a firearm. The vote was 64-29 in favor of House Bill 786. It now heads to Governor Bill Lee’s desk and he is expected to sign it soon but an exact date was not announced.

If signed by Governor Lee, the law would go into effect July 1, 2021.

The bill allows military members ages 18 to 20, and adults 20 and older to carry open or concealed handguns without a permit. Currently, gun owners have to take a training course before carrying a handgun.

It also increases punishments for certain gun crimes. The theft of a firearm will be increased from a misdemeanor to a class E felony.

The bill has received criticism from numerous groups, including law enforcement over concerns it would increase crime. Supporters said it backs up their 2nd Amendment rights.
