TRAFFIC STOP RESULTS IN METH ARREST

ACCORDING TO A REPORT FROM THE CUMBERLAND COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE, On Friday last week, Deputy Tyler Leary was pulling out of Executive Inn and saw a silver Mitsubishi SUV traveling outbound on Highway 127 North. The deputy observed the driver lean back in their seat, placing their head behind the B-pillar of the vehicle to avoid being seen, which is abnormal behavior.

The deputy saw the vehicle cross over the double yellow line once and then cross over the white fog line once, which is when the deputy conducted a traffic stop for failure to maintain lane of travel.

The deputy identified the driver as Lorie Smith and asked her to step out of the vehicle to write a warning citation. During questioning. The deputy asked if there was anything illegal in the vehicle and she said that there was a marijuana roach in the center console. The deputy asked her to get the roach out of the vehicle and she pulled a plastic mince container with a burnt roll of marijuana inside.

This prompted the deputy to perform a probable cause search of the vehicle and during the search, the deputy noticed Smith messing with something inside of her pants pocket.

The deputy asked what was in her pockets and she pulled out a plastic bag from her jeans. This is when the deputy attempted to handcuff Smith, however, she started to pull away and tossed the small plastic bag under the vehicle.

The deputy gave several commands for her to place her hands behind her back, but she refused. This is when the Deputy attempted to bring her to the ground with an arm sweep. However, after being assisted to the ground, Smith pulled her arms away and refused to comply with several commands.

The deputy was able to regain control and place her in double lock-hinged handcuffs.

The Deputy was able to find the small bag and purple straw that she had tossed under the vehicle. The small bag contained another small bag and inside was 79 g of methamphetamine, a Post-It note which also contained 1.18 g of methamphetamine as well as a purple straw with white residue.

Smith was searched, arrested, and transported to Cumberland County intake for booking for simple possession of meth, tampering with evidence, resisting arrest, and drug paraphernalia.
