TROOPERS RELEASE REPORT OF SPARTA GAS STATION FIRE INCIDENT

The Tennessee Highway Patrol released their preliminary report this morning of a crash Saturday resulting in a fire at Peacock Gas Station on Bockman Way in Sparta.

It states a 2012 Chevy pickup driven by 40-year-old Jason Byrd of Miamisburg, Ohio, was traveling west at a high rate of speed when Byrd attempted making a turn onto North Highland Drive. He lost control and went through a gas canopy support beam and struck several pumps. The truck came to rest after colliding with a 2014 Toyota sedan operated by 19-year-old Ronald Martin of Crossville parked under the canopy resulting in a fire. The impact hurled one of the pumps across the parking lot and hit an unoccupied 2000 Dodge minivan catching it ablaze. The crash also caused damage to the store.

Injuries were noted to Byrd, Martin and two passengers in Martin’s vehicle (a 19 and 11-year-old).

Charges are pending against Byrd.

Other reports indicate the truck Byrd was driving was reported stolen in the Bon Air community.

A full report is expected to be released soon by the Sparta Police Department.
