TWO DEAD IN HEAD ON VEHICLE COLLISION ON I-40

Two individuals died in a head on crash on Interstate 40 in Cumberland County just before sunrise this morning. According to the preliminary report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol, a 2015 Mazda CX9 was traveling west in the eastbound lane of I-40 at the 333 mile marker when the driver collided head on with a 2017 Freightliner tractor-trailer around 5:30 a.m. The Mazda came to rest against a guard rail and the tractor-trailer hauling general groceries came to a stop against the cable barrier blocking the eastbound lanes. Eastbound traffic was detoured onto Highway 70 at the Crab Orchard exit for hours as troopers investigated the accident scene. Officials says debris from the Mazda was scattered all around the impact site. The names of the two killed in the accident or a cause of the driver going the wrong way on the interstate has not been released yet. The accident remains under investigation by the Tennessee Highway Patrol.
