TWO RETIRED ROCKWOOD HIGH SCHOOL TEACHERS INJURED IN SINGLE-VEHICLE CRASH

Rockwood fire, police and EMS responded to a single-vehicle wreck early Saturday evening. Two elderly women were injured when the car they were in went down the embankment across from the Barrington Place subdivision entrance on Highway 27.

Police say 84-year-old Geraldine Wallick and 80-year-old Anne Heigle, both retired Rockwood High School teachers, were sent to a hospital in Knoxville for treatment of injuries following the accident. The report states Heigle, who was driving, was allegedly swatting at a spider when she ran off the right side of the highway and went down the embankment.

The fire department had to use a rope attached to a back board to retrieve the elderly women, and then get them loaded into ambulances. Wallick has been released, but as of noon today, Heigle remained hospitalized.

No charges are expected.
