TWRA JOINS DISCUSSIONS ON SHOOTING SPORTS PARK DEBACLE

The Crossville City Council held a work session Tuesday in regards to the proposed shooting sports park issue. It was not a standing-room-only crowd as in the past, but new additions to the attendees included members of the Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency, the organization footing the bill for the project. The council had previously struck a contract with the non-profit group, Crossville Shooting Park Inc, for the acquisition of city-owned land off Albert Frye Rd. for the location of the park. Then earlier this month, the council rescinded the contract, due to what Council Member Danny Wyatt calls “public objection” by area property owners. Residents say their main objection is the noise and location, but Jim Bledsoe with the TWRA Commission, those officials that applied for and received a grant for $2.2 million for the construction of the park, said Tuesday that the grant money is tied to that location and if another site was possibly chosen, the whole process, including thousands of dollars and man-hours and environmental studies, would have to “start from scratch”. He also said that if nothing is done by June 30, there is no promise that the money would be provided again in the next fiscal year. Cumberland County Mayor Kenneth Carey also spoke to dismiss rumors concerning him and the non-profit. He stated that neither he nor any member of the non-profit would receive any compensation from the park and that all time is volunteered. Several others spoke “for” and “against” the project and towards the end of the meeting, Wyatt said that the council wanted the sports park but the contract specifically stated “due diligence” against public objection. City Mayor James Mayberry announced that there would be a gathering of shooters at the proposed location on Albert Frye Rd. Saturday morning in order to test for decibel levels in the presence of property owners. That meeting is scheduled for 10 AM. He also said that another special-called work session would be needed to discuss the matter afterward.
