‘UNUSUAL EVENT’ RESULTS IN SHUT DOWN OF REACTOR AT WATTS BAR

TVA idled one of the reactors at Watts Bar Nuclear Power Plant in Rhea County Wednesday after a gauge indicated an “unusually” lower than expected level in one of its four steam generators. Officials say 15 minutes after that, the Unit 1 reactor was shut down after workers detected smoke in a battery room in the control building. A low level emergency response was put into place. It was lowered after plant workers determined there was no fire but an overheated component that began smoking. The initial problem that caused the Unit 1 reactor at Watts Bar to shut down was determined to be a faulty control card that gave workers a false indication of a problem. Officials say there were no safety issues inside the power plant.
