A victim in his 70’s reported yesterday to Crossville police he was scammed out of nearly $50,000.

He received a message on his laptop to contact “Microsoft Tech Support” because his laptop kept crashing. When he called, he was informed his bank account had also been hacked.

The scammer told the victim he needed to go to his bank in Crossville and do a wire transfer for $49,500 to Bangkok Bank Public Limited and address the transfer to “Miss Praphai Sigoiu”.

When he went to the bank, he was told not to do it as it was clearly a scam.

The next day he was contacted again by the scammer informing him the bank refused to do the wire transfer. He was told to withdrawn the money from his account but this time deposit it to his other bank in town to set up the transfer again. He was giving a different name of “Miss Monthicha Kluaithet” to send it to.

It was processed and he lost the money.

Law enforcement encourages everyone not to fall for scams of this nature.
