VIRGINIA BOAR’S HEAD PLANT TO SHUT DOWN
The Boar’s Head plant based in Jarrat, VA that was at the center of a deadly listeria outbreak is set to shut down.
Also, Boar’s Head will permanently discontinue production of liverwurst which was the product recalled in July.
A press release from Boar’s Head reads as follows:
“Given the seriousness of the outbreak and the fact that it originated at Jarratt, we have made the difficult decision to indefinitely close this location, which has not been operational since late July 2024. It pains us to impact the livelihoods of hundreds of hard-working employees. We do not take lightly our responsibility as one of the area’s largest employers. But, under these circumstances, we feel that a plant closure is the most prudent course. We will work to assist each of our employees in the transition process.”
Boar’s Head also said they plan on taking new safety measures and precautions which include hiring a new Chief Food Safety and Quality Assurance Officer as soon as possible.
The company is also Establishing a “Boar’s Head Food Safety Council” who will also serve as advisors to the new Chief Food Safety Officer and the company as a whole.
The company has also announced the appointment of new founding council members: Dr. David Acheson, Dr. Mindy Brashears, Dr. Martin Wiedmann, and Frank Yiannas, MPH.
