WANTED FUGITIVE ARRESTED AFTER HIGHWAY 27 SHUT DOWN

The Rhea County Sheriff’s Department assisted Chief Chris Sneed and the Dayton Police Department along with the ATF today in the arrest of James Orcutt who was wanted in the State of Michigan for a parole violation warrant. Dayton police started the investigation into Orcutt this morning with a shots fired call in area of Memorial Avenue. During the investigation Orcutt reportedly spoke with law enforcement on the phone and made threats that he would not go back to jail without a shootout with law enforcement. During the investigation it was found that Orcutt was staying at the Scottish Inn on Rhea County Highway in Dayton. The motel was surrounded and the area businesses were notified of the potential threat. Highway 27 was shut down to ensure the safety of passing motorists. Orcutt was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Rhea County jail. The Dayton Police Department obtained a search warrant for the room and found a large amount of marijuana and other paraphernalia along with firearms related items. Also arrested was a female subject, 27-year-old Barbara O’Neal, who had been in the room with Orcutt. She was charged with possession of drugs for resale and possession of drug paraphernalia.
