WEIGEL’S TO SWITCH FOAM CUPS TO PAPER CUPS BY END OF 2018

Weigel’s announced yesterday the gas station and convenience store chain would be eliminating polystyrene hot cups and replacing them with double-walled paper cups in honor of Earth Day on April 22. The new paper cup was selected from providers because of its limited impact on waste and natural resources. The cups will be manufactured with no glue or plastic fillers, which allows the cup to be completely recyclable, and it meets Sustainable Forestry Initiative standards, meaning it’s made from 100 percent certified recycled content from a certified non-controversial, sustainable forest. Weigel’s officials said the design of the cup creates an insulated air pocket so liquid inside the cup stays hot while the outside of the cup stays at a comfortable temperature for holding. The cup transition will begin in May 2018, officials announced. All cups, in all sizes, will be replaced with the new paper cup, and chain representatives said the transition is expected to be complete at the end of 2018. Weigel’s operates numerous stores in the listening area, including locations in Crossville, Fairfield Glade, Midtown, Kingston, Lenoir City, Loudon, Sweetwater and several in the Knoxville area.
