WEST NILE VIRUS CONFIRMED IN HORSE IN CUMBERLAND COUNTY

The state veterinarian’s office has confirmed the West Nile Virus in a horse in Cumberland County, Another horse in Bradley County was confirmed with the disease. Mosquitoes and other biting insects are responsible for transmission of West Nile Virus. Symptoms in horses may include fever, weakness, loss of appetite, or convulsions. The illness can cause lasting effects and, in some cases, can be fatal. Experts recommend eliminate standing water sources on farms and fields where insects may gather and breed, manage manure and disposal, and apply fly and insect spray as needed.
