WHITE COUNTY COMMISSION APPROACHED WITH PROPOSAL ON NEW STATE VETERANS CEMETERY

For several years, attempts have been made to try and build a State Veteran’s Cemetery in the Upper Cumberland area. Both Cumberland and Putnam Counties were in the running for such a project due to their proximity in the state. There are currently two such cemeteries in Knoxville, one in Nashville and one in West Tennessee. The Upper Cumberland State Veterans Cemetery Association says their goal is to buy land and build the cemetery so that veterans are within a 75-mile radius. Discussion had also centered around buying property somewhere between Putnam and White County. The group has approached the White County Commission for a donation of $20,000. But, according to commissioners, circumstances beyond the county’s control interfere with the request.
