WHITE COUNTY JUDGE REVERSES ORDER FOR INMATE BIRTH CONTROL PROGRAM

Because of public pressure from the 13th Judicial District Attorney’s Office and the ACLU, a judge in White County has stopped offering a free birth control program for shorter jail sentences. Judge Sam Benningfield was giving 30 days credit to male inmates who agreed to get vasectomies and female inmates who agreed to get birth control implants. Under the program all procedures were provided free of charge by the state health dept. Benningfield said he was tired of seeing repeat offenders in his court who could not pay for their child support. Although several inmates had signed up for the program, officials with the state health dept. announced that they would no longer offer the free program to White County inmates. Judge Benningfield reversed his order last week but says that those inmates who had agreed to birth control will still get 30 days off their sentences, whether or not the procedure was performed.
