WILLIAM JENKINS FOUND GUILTY OF MULTIPLE AGGRAVATED BURGLARIES

From the office of 9th Judicial District Attorney General Russell Johnson:
On Thursday evening, at the conclusion of a day long trial, and after deliberating for approximately an hour and 45 minutes, a Loudon County jury found William “Billy” Jenkins (49 YOM) of Sweetwater guilty as charged on multiple aggravated burglaries acting in concert with two or more people and a charge of theft between $10,000 – $60,000.
Jenkins qualifies as a career offender based on his prior criminal history so he will have to serve at least a 30 year sentence without eligibility for early release or parole or under Tennessee’s relatively new ‘truth in sentencing’ changes to the sentencing laws. These tougher sentences were backed by the Tennessee District Attorneys Conference with the help of the majority of legislators who favored changes to stop the recent trend of early release and safety valve mechanisms in the Tennessee sentencing laws.
Loudon County Chief Deputy Sheriff Kevin Kirkland was the prosecuting officer for the State. The victim of Jenkins‘s burglaries and theft was Jason Humphreys, who also testified.
Assistant District Attorney Generals Bob Edwards and Jason Collver prosecuted the case for the State of Tennessee. Judge Jeff Wicks presided over the jury trial.
Jenkins was out on bond pending trial. At the conclusion of the trial, the State moved that Jenkins’s bond be revoked and he be remanded into custody. Judge Wicks granted the State’s motion and ordered Jenkins taken into custody. A sentencing hearing was set for May 20, 2025.
After the trial was over, and the jury was released, as deputies were taking the defendant outside of the Lenoir City City Hall, where jury trials have to take place since there is no courthouse available due to the courthouse burning in April 2019, which has not yet been put back in use, Jenkins took off running while officers were loading him into a squad car. One of the other deputies was able to tackle him and Jenkins was taken to the Loudon County jail. The sheriff’s office is evaluating potential additional charges.
