WOMAN CHARGED AFTER ATTEMPTING TO STEAL FROM SEVERAL RESIDENCES

On Saturday night, Cumberland County officers were dispatched to a residence off Tabor Loop for a prowler on their property. Once the deputy made contact with the homeowners, they told him there was a female but now could no longer locate her.

Shortly after, dispatch was notified of a burglary in progress off Highway 127 North. When the deputy arrived, the homeowners stated they came outside and both of their vehicle doors were open. Property from both of their vehicles had been removed and sat on the ground or in a truck that a female had driven. The female was identified as 36-year-old Jennifer Mathes who was standing in the driveway. When asked why she was there, she allegedly told the deputy that she had smelled gas and was looking for tools to shut off the gas. She continued saying she needed to contact VEC to turn off the electricity to the residence. The deputy noted Ms. Mathes seemed to be on narcotics while speaking with her.

When the deputy asked to search Ms. Mathes’s purse, two pills were found, which were later identified as Gabapentin. She was then placed into custody.

While at the Justice Center, dispatch was notified that a vehicle was stolen from a business earlier off HWY 127 N. Green Construction showed video footage of what appears to be Jennifer Mathes crawling under the gate and stealing a Ford F70 from the parking lot. Ms. Mathes was shown getting into the truck and attempting to drive through two locked gates.

A total of four different vehicles had their doors left open without the consent of the owners. The surveillance also showed her entering a Ford Bronco that was parked inside the gate where she left her backpack.

When the truck was returned to the owner, it had front-end damage from ramming the gates and engine problems that were not present before.

While at the jail, Ms. Mathes allegedly told deputies that she knows she stole a bunch of stuff today.

She was charged with:

  • Burglary x 6
  • Vandalism x 4
  • Aggravated Criminal Trespassing
  • Simple Possession
  • Public Intoxication
  • Theft of Property-vehicle
