WOMAN FILES FALSE STATEMENT REGARDING FATAL ROCKWOOD FIRE

The body of a man who died in a Roane County fire on March 16 has been identified. Deputies, fire crews and first responders were dispatched to 1147 Mountain View Rd. on that date for a doublewide mobile home on fire. Human remains were found at a set of stairs at the burned home and a preliminary investigation led to the fact that the former residents, Joshua Walker and Lydia Vasquez, had moved out of the residence approximately a week and a half before the fire. An intensive search for the couple began which led to both being found alive and well in Rockwood. Vasquez told police that she had stayed with a friend in Sunbright on the night of the fire. When asked about the body, she replied that she did not know who it was and that she had not been back to the home. Upon further investigation, it was learned that Vasquez and Walker had been at the home on March 15 with a male identified as Johnathan Pesterfield. Based on that fact and dental records, the body was positively identified as that of Pesterfield. According to authorities, it was revealed that Vasquez had spent the evening at the home with Pesterfield. Because of Vasques’s false statement about the incident, she was charged with filing a false report or statement. The investigation is continuing.
