On this day back in 1995 (May 18), a large outbreak of supercell thunderstorms formed in Middle Tennessee resulting in 16 confirmed tornadoes. It was the 5th largest tornado outbreak in mid-state history. An F-4 tornado tore a 29 mile path across Lawrence and Giles Counties, killing 3 and injuring 32.

Another massive F3 tornado carves a 1/2 mile wide swath across Cumberland County, ending on the southwest side of Crossville.

The tornado would be one of four tornadoes to ever hit Cumberland County as an F-3 since 1880. Cumberland County has yet to ever record an F-4 or the strongest on the scale, an F-5.

The tornado touched down at 5:10 p.m. and the length of the path was 10 miles. It resulted in 20 injuries and no fatalities. The tornado first touched down in the southwest part of Cumberland County and moved northeast. Two business were destroyed. Eleven homes and 14 mobiles homes were destroyed. Many other homes were damaged. One house had a gas leak in it prompting emergency management officials to evacuate a handful of nearby residents. Other homes had roof damage. Numerous trees and power lines were knocked down.
