STATE COMPTROLLER UNCOVERS QUESTIONABLE SPENDING AT OAK RIDGE HIGH SCHOOL

The Tennessee Comptroller’s Office investigated the Oak Ridge High School Navy JROTC Booster Club, uncovering over $24,000 in questionable transactions from 2020 to 2022, including $21,943.18 in undocumented cash withdrawals and $2,660.60 in unexplained checks to the former treasurer.
The investigation, prompted by school officials’ concerns, revealed internal control failures, such as missing financial records, lack of two-signature verification for checks, and failure to file IRS Form 990-N, leading to the club’s loss of tax-exempt status in 2022 and dissolution in 2023.
Findings were sent to state authorities, and the full report is available at comptroller.tn.gov/ia.
