ROCKWOOD CITY COUNCIL APPROVES ZONING CHANGE FOR POTENTIAL APARTMENT DEVELOPMENT

The Rockwood City Council, along with city staff and the mayor, met on Monday evening at City Hall. Under old business, the council gave second reading approval to an ordinance amending the city’s zoning map. This rezoned the property at 325 North Kingston Avenue—previously home to a now-closed daycare—from C-2 Highway Business District to R-2 Medium Density Residential. The change could open the door for future apartment development on the site.

The council also passed an ordinance updating several international codes within the Rockwood Municipal Code, shifting from the 2017 building codes to the newer 2021 editions.

In addition, members approved five appointments to the Downtown Improvement Grant Selection Committee. This followed a meeting with downtown business owners interested in using state grant funds for upgrades to their storefronts or businesses. Those approved to serve on the committee include City Codes and Building Inspector Harold Ishman, City Council representative April Foust Wilson, Francis Gann, and Leanne Malicoat. The committee will be responsible for reviewing and selecting which downtown businesses qualify for the grant funding.

Other items approved during the meeting included the hiring of a head mechanic for the city garage and a public works laborer, as well as several budget amendments.
