POWER OUTAGE HITS DOWNTOWN KINGSTON AND ROANE COUNTY JAIL

A scheduled outage by Rockwood Electric Utility left most, if not all, of downtown Kingston without power late last night. The outage began just after 11 p.m. as crews performed maintenance on a substation near the downtown area.

The outage also affected the Roane County Jail, where the backup generator failed to activate immediately. Chief Deputy Tim Phillips said the delay was caused by low water levels in the diesel generator. As a result, the jail operated on emergency lighting for about 30 minutes until the generator came online.

The power loss also disrupted the jail’s data systems, causing delays in processing and communications earlier today. A water leak was additionally reported in a couple of staff offices during the incident.

Officials say all systems at the Roane County Jail are now back up and running.
