NEMO DAY USE AREA AND ROCK CREEK CAMPGROUND TEMPORARILY CLOSED TO SWIMMING AND FISHING
Effective 12:00 p.m. on Friday, June 12, 2026, the National Park Service has issued a temporary closure restricting swimming and fishing at the Nemo Day Use Area and Rock Creek Campground within the Obed Wild and Scenic River. Under the discretionary authority of Superintendent Niki Nicholas and Chief Ranger Anthony Garner, this emergency measure was implemented following a railroad derailment upstream along the Emory River on the evening of June 11, 2026.
Because it is currently unknown whether contaminants will wash downstream, the closure is necessary to protect the safety of park visitors. The restrictions will remain in place until the damage is fully assessed and cleanup efforts are completed to ensure the area is safe. Notice will be posted directly at the impacted sites, and the area will be monitored for compliance.
