MORGAN COUNTY EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT AGENCY LEADS RESPONSE OPERATIONS AFTER TRAIN DERAILMENT
Following the Norfolk Southern train derailment in Morgan County, response operations are being led by the Morgan County Emergency Management Agency in coordination with local officials, Norfolk Southern, and multiple state and federal agencies. Current air and water monitoring by federal partners and contractors has detected no ethanol, and community air quality remains safe, though localized odors may be noticeable near the river.
While no drinking water issues have been identified, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) has issued a temporary contact advisory cautioning visitors to avoid portions of the Emory River near Camp Austin Bridge, the Nemo Picnic Area, and the derailment site near Emory Heights Road. The fire has been extinguished and is being monitored, and train traffic has resumed on a single operational track while derailed cars remain to the side.
Agencies including the EPA, TEMA, TWRA, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will continue to collaborate on environmental monitoring, public safety, and remediation oversight as conditions remain stable.
