CROSSVILLE WOMAN FACES MULTIPLE CHARGES AFTER HIGH-SPEED INTERSTATE CHASE WITH INFANT BURIED UNDER DEBRIS
A routine traffic stop on Interstate 40 escalated into a dramatic arrest last week, leaving a Cumberland County woman facing a slew of criminal charges, including felony reckless endangerment and child abuse.
Cheryse Katrina Seburn was apprehended on June 19, 2026, after Deputy Jordan Winningham of the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Department clocked her white Kia Optima traveling at 87 mph in a 70 mph zone during inclement weather and hazardous road conditions.
According to the affidavit of complaint, the situation quickly deteriorated when Deputy Winningham initiated the traffic stop. Upon making contact with Seburn, the deputy ordered her to step out of the vehicle. Seburn allegedly refused to comply, prompting Winningham to open the car door to remove her. A brief struggle ensued as Seburn resisted, but she was ultimately taken into custody.
A subsequent search of the vehicle and a dispatch check revealed a series of alarming discoveries:
-
Child Endangerment: Officers discovered a five-month-old infant in the back seat, completely buried underneath a pile of miscellaneous items. The infant’s car seat was not properly installed, and the child was not safely buckled.
-
Illicit Contraband: Deputies located a clear plastic bag containing approximately 7.32 grams of marijuana.
-
Licensing Issues: A background check confirmed that Seburn was operating the vehicle without a valid driver’s license.
The defiance reportedly continued even after Seburn was transported to the local detention facility, where she refused to sign the citations issued by law enforcement.
Following the incident, Seburn was formally charged in Cumberland County General Sessions Court on June 22, 2026. She faces seven distinct counts:
- Reckless Endangerment – Vehicle (Felony)
- Child Abuse/Neglect/Endangerment
- Resisting Stop, Arrest, or Search (No Weapon)
- Casual Exchange (Marijuana)
- Reckless Driving
- Driving Without a License
- Arrest When Refusing to Sign Agreement to Appear
Seburn is scheduled to appear on the Cumberland County General Sessions Criminal Court docket on June 25, 2026. She has been appointed a public defender to represent her in the matter. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
