JUSTIN DYKES ARRESTED AFTER CRASHING TRUCK INTO TREE AND FLEEING SCENE
A local man was taken into custody on July 10 following a single-vehicle crash on Highland Lane after allegedly leaving the scene before law enforcement arrived.
According to a report from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Jason Powers responded to the 3280 block of Highland Lane after a passerby reported a black and white 2017 GMC Sierra pickup truck had gone off the right side of the road and struck a tree along a fence line.
The witness told dispatchers that the truck’s driver claimed he was uninjured and had already called a tow truck, asking the witness not to contact authorities. The driver then left the area in a vehicle driven by someone who stopped to pick him up.
Shortly after arriving at the crash site, Deputy Powers received information from an off-duty reserve deputy indicating the driver was located at a residence on Dallas Smith Road. Deputies made contact with 34-year-old Justin Ryan Dykes of Crossville, who had visible abrasions and a knot above his right eyebrow. Dykes refused medical treatment, confirmed he was driving the truck at the time of the incident, and was taken into custody.
Dykes told officers that his right tires slipped off the asphalt, pulling the vehicle off the road. He stated he did not realize he had damaged property or that he was legally required to report the crash. Officers noted he did not appear to be under the influence.
