HIGH-SPEED PURSUIT ACROSS CUMBERLAND COUNTY ENDS IN SEVERE CRASH; DRIVER AIRLIFTED

A high-speed police pursuit through Cumberland and surrounding counties ended in a major collision early on July 3, leaving the suspect critically injured and facing multiple criminal charges.

The incident began around 4:08 a.m. near the Pilot Travel Center on Crabtree Road, when Patrol Officer Nathan Ramson of the Crossville Police Department observed a black pickup truck driving on the grassy shoulder. After entering the roadway, the vehicle accelerated rapidly, failed to maintain its lane, and swerved recklessly through traffic.

Officer Ramson initiated a traffic stop on suspicion of Driving Under the Influence (DUI). When the driver refused to yield, Officer Ramson requested and received authorization from Supervisor Sergeant Chrystal Massey to pursue the vehicle.

According to police reports, the driver—later identified as Dustin Core—led authorities on a perilous chase across local roads and onto Interstate 40 West. Throughout the pursuit, Core continuously swerved, drove onto shoulders, and executed sudden lane changes at speeds ranging between 80 and 120 mph, forcing several motorists to take emergency evasive action.

Near Exit 273 on I-40 West, law enforcement successfully deployed a tire deflation device (spike strips). Despite severe tire damage that threw debris into the path of pursuing officers, Core continued driving on shredded tires at speeds near 100 mph.

The pursuit came to a halt near mile marker 267 near the I-40 westbound rest area. Core struck a curb at approximately 100 mph, lost control of the vehicle, and slammed into a parked commercial flatbed tractor-trailer and a commercial flatbed trailer.

The violent impact trapped Core inside the driver’s compartment, leaving him with significant injuries to his head and legs. Emergency response unfolded as follows:

  • Immediate First Aid: An Emergency Medical Responder with the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office rendered immediate aid, applying direct pressure to Core’s severe head wound.

  • Extrication: Crews from Smith County Fire and Rescue utilized hydraulic rescue equipment (the “Jaws of Life”) to remove the roof of the pickup truck and free Core.

  • Airlift to Vanderbilt: Due to the severity of his injuries, emergency personnel designated Core as a high-priority patient. He was medically evacuated via helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.

Neither of the commercial vehicles involved sustained enough damage to require towing, and no other injuries were reported.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) took charge of the crash investigation. During the on-scene inspection, Trooper Holmes seized a dash camera from Core’s vehicle. Authorities are securing a search warrant to review its contents for additional evidence.

Police are also obtaining a subpoena for Core’s hospital blood samples to analyze for alcohol or controlled substances.

While Core remains hospitalized at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Crossville Police confirmed that four outstanding warrants will be served upon his release, with additional charges pending the outcome of the dash camera and toxicology investigations.
